Angklung

NUS CAC Angklung Ensemble was established in the year 2007 having parted company from its previous flagship of the Indonesian student organization, Perhimpunan Indonesia NUS (PINUS); we are now under the Cultural Activities Club umbrella, marking our international nature. Despite our young age, we have already performed in various events, even outside of NUS. The light learning curve of playing angklung and its uniqueness attract local and international students from all over NUS, making up for over 40 active members.

Guitar

The CAC Guitar Club has come a long way from its roots as a classical ensemble to its current incarnation of full bands, which includes electric guitars, bass, drums, as well as vocalists. Aside from CAC’s internal concert CAC+US 2010 and other NUS events, the club's bands have also performed at Holland Village, the River Hongbao for Chingay, and at the Esplanade outdoor theatre. The music played at these events spans a wide range of genres: from heavy metal and rock to pop, funk and even Hokkien and Hindi songs, showcasing the versatility of the Guitar Club's musicians.

Resonance

Formed in 2001, Resonance is an a cappella CCA under the NUS Cultural Activities Club. We are a bunch of people bound by a common love for singing. We have members from diverse musical backgrounds, and we sing just about anything — from contemporary pop to choral, alternative rock to swing, and even the occasional techno tune.
Resonance continually strives towards our goal of promoting a greater awareness of a cappella music in and outside of campus.
To date, our most satisfying achievements would include clinching the top position in the local National A Cappella Championships (2006 - 2008 & 2011), and our biennale concert series, Vocal Obsession and The Inside Edition.

Voices
Voices gathers students who have a love of singing and aims to improve the performance standards of its members. Formed in 1999, Voices has since evolved to what it is today, thanks to the relentless support rendered by the NUS CAC (Cultural Activities Club).

Members have the access to several performing platforms, and are given various opportunities to perform both on and off-campus. The experience garnered from these performing opportunities culminate into the main highlight of the club: our annual concert production, Emerge.

Besides training potential vocalists, we also have our own instrumentalists to support the vocalists. The instrumentalists provide the vocalists with a more realistic performing experience, as well as help the club to diversify our repertoire of music. Our instrumentalists enjoy working constructively in a band environment, and enjoy the challenge of meeting the audience’s expectations for every song they perform.

Lindy Hop

  • Currently with about 15-20 active members, the Lindy Hop committee strives to advocate the conviviality of the dance. Danced to the rhythm of swing music as well as to certain suitable modern pieces, Lindy Hop encompasses a myriad of jazz, Charleston, and many other swing steps.
  • The club holds beginner sessions once every week. A brand new Shim Sham course is being held this semester, which may be associated with tap dance.
  • Lindy Hop also participates in performance events, especially major ones like Infusion and Cactus, as well as the recent RunNUS 2011.

Social and Ballroom

NUSSNB was set up as a sub-club of NUS Cultural Activites Club (CAC) in year 1994.

Through organising dance courses and performances, our club aims to raise the awareness of Social and Ballroom Dances in the NUS community.

We actively seek to create opportunities for NUS students as well as affiliated organisations to enjoy this graceful art and step into the decathlon of dance.

Our courses are taught by experienced trained professional dance masters where you can enjoy more affordable rates compared to anywhere else. Our club also performs in both internal and external events and also engages in dancesport competitions.

Salsa

The NUS Salsa Club is a cozy community that provides Beginner and Intermediate Salsa classes at a discount (both on and off campus) and manages the NUS Salsa Performance Team. With less than a year of experience, the team put up its first performance at the annual CAC+Us concert, organized by NUS Cultural Activities Club. It has also performed at the NUS Open House and will be performing at other noteworthy events in the upcoming semester. The Club has been growing since it started out, many years ago, as a special project and has become a sub-committee and finally a full-fledged Club. We host popular social nights within NUS and excursions to local Salsa clubs & parties around Singapore. Aside from Salsa, the other offerings of the Club include popular dances like Bachata and Zouk. The Club hopes to share the fun of Salsa with NUS as a dance not just for romance but friendship too. If you ever wanted to learn to Salsa, come join us!

BreakiNUS

BreakiNUS is a group of amateurs that are currently studying in the National University of Singapore who seek to provide the space and resources for interested members to develop their bboying skills.

Bboying/ bgirling is a very energetic dance sport that started in South Bronx, New York in the 1980s. Ever since, the term B-boy is widespread all over the world as a significant part of hip hop culture. Interestingly, the term breakdancing is a misnomer and was coined by the media and is not the correct term for bboying or breaking.

We hope to create an environment whereby our members are motivated to have their own dance sessions whenever they are free. To complement that, the club conducts weekly trainings, organizes regular workshops, and also keeps a look out for showcases as well as performance opportunities.

Lessons usually commence every academic semester and we conduct courses catering to a wide range of students. Beginner as well as advanced classes are conducted by the Dance Captain, or by a member instructor appointed by the Dance Captain. On rare occasions we do bring in qualified professional bboys to hold extra workshops to further enhance our dance skills.
